UDBrain - The UrbanDead Metadata Collector
All UrbanDead players have experienced at some point or another the horror of being stranded, almost out of action points, outside of a heavily barricaded building which moments before was only very strongly barricaded. Ultimately, with all action points exhausted while trying to find another safehouse, the uneasy and unsheltered logoff occurs, with fears of finding the "stand up" button on the screen the next day. However, with this new revolutionary system, no longer will Maltonians have to suffer such horrific fate.
UDBrain uses a MySQL database to keep track of the barricade status of all the buildings in Malton. The Firefox extension prints the barricade status of all the buildings on the map in each building's square, and, on mouseover, tells how old each barricade report is. Users who have installed the script automatically report barricade status of the square they are on every time the page loads. (The page reloads every time the player spends an action point or refreshes the page.) In this way, the server has a constant flow of fresh data from all its users, and hopefully barricade data will rarely be outdated, since the users all are essentially reporting to each other with to-the-second data.
The scope of this project not only includes barricade status reports; ultimately (and hopefully) it will include a number of other reports, and the capacity to flag and track known PKers and GKers.
This project requires many users! In order to avoid putting unnecessary strain on the UrbanDead servers and to widen the area of available coverage, UDBrain collects its data solely from Maltonians who play with the user script enabled. While you may not see much of a benefit to using it at first, over time more data will become available. It won't significantly slow down your gaming, and doesn't run on any page but the UD Map page. Please use it!
